SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Kirwin 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 15th\, 2026\, for our annual tour of Kirwin\, a ghost town deep in the National Forest! Tour the historic town of Kirwin in the Shoshone National Forest and learn about the history of this boom and bust mining town. Learn about the ecology of the Kirwin area with Kassy Skeen\, Forest Ecologist with the Shoshone National Forest.\n\nWe will caravan from the Museums at 9:00 AM to reach Kirwin around 10:30 AM\; tour participants must drive themselves. If you know the way and would prefer to drive to the site independently\, feel free to meet Museum staff there instead of traveling with the group! If you have the space in your vehicle and are willing to lend a hand\, please meet at the Museum from 8:30 to 9 to coordinate carpooling.\n\nWe recommend using a high-clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive to reach Kirwin\, as the road is rough and there are multiple river crossings. Plan to pack in water and pack out any trash. There are vault toilets at the Wood River Campground and the Brown Mountain Campground along the way\, and another vault toilet at Kirwin.\n\nKeep an eye on our website and Facebook page for last-minute weather-related cancellations\, or call the Museum at 307-868-2423 to check whether the tour is a go.
